What is Liothyronine Sodium

Liothyronine sodium is a man-made version of one of the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine that is normally produced by the thyroid gland. These thyroid hormones are essential in development of all the human body cells and also are very important in regulating fat, protein and carbohydrate metabolism, helping the human cells to properly use energy compounds.  Without this hormone, the human body would have lack of energy, delayed growth, hair loss, sensitivity to cold and weight gain.

Liothyronine Sodium is sold under the brand name Cytomel (in form of tablets) and as Triostat (in form of injections). Liothyronine Sodium is used to treat people who suffer from hypothyroidism - when the human body can’t produce enough thyroid hormones resulting in cold feeling, weak bones, tiredness and slow heart rate. The drug also helps people treat or prevent goiter (enlarged thyroid gland) and myxedema coma. Being a salt of triiodothyronine, the substance is medically very similar to T3 so it is considered the most potent form of thyroid hormone. By treating the thyroid hormone, pharmacologically, the drug is increasing the basal metabolic rate of body tissues. That is why it is believed that this drug can help treating obesity. Many people are considering Liothyronine Sodium a remarkable fat burning drug.

How to use Liothyronine Sodium

The drug can be orally administered in form of tablets, or administered intramuscularly. The drug showed best performance is administered at the same time each day. It is recommended to take it a single time per day, usually in the morning before breakfast. The dosage is individual, but it doesn’t depend on gender or body’s weight, it only depends on body’s blood level and on personal goals.  For example, to treat mild hypothyroidism it is recommended to start with a 25 mcg a day but it varies for other conditions, so each individual should consult a doctor before starting using the drug.

Studies have shown that when taking this drug, one should start at the lowest dosage then gradually raise it up. Also, it has been established that the minimum dosage per day is 5 mcg and the maximum is no more than 100 mcg for a good ratio of benefits/side effects. The period of the drug’s administration is also individualized so it should be taken as prescribed by the doctor. Some patients are prescribed the drug for the entire life spam.

Side effects of Liothyronine Sodium

Extra dosages should not be taken otherwise one increases the risks of side effects. It is unknown the frequency of the side effects but the following can occur regardless of the gender: vomiting, excessive weight loss, headaches, muscle weakness, loss of hair especially in children, heart related problems, palpitations, fever, heat intolerance, sweating, feeling of tiredness and restless, rashes, increased sugar levels in blood, nausea, problems sleeping and nervousness.

Though many people don’t have any serious side effects while using the drug, it is recommended to seek immediate health care if any of these negative effects mentioned above occur.
