What is Exemestane?

Exemestane is an oral steroid used to prevent the growth or to treat certain types of breast cancers tumors by lowering estrogen levels in postmenopausal women. Breast cancers tumors appear and increase in number by the human body naturally produced hormone called estrogen. Exemestane helps by stopping cancerous cells from growing or by reversing its effects, therefore, the steroid reduces woman’s chance to develop breast cancer and it also prevents the cancer from returning.

Exemestane is sold under the trade name Aromasin, and it is one member of the aromatase inhibitors class of drugs. This kind of drugs blocks the synthesis of estrogen. While decreasing the amount of estrogen human body naturally produces, the drug is decreasing the chances of cancerous tumors growth. The medication is often given to postmenopausal women whose cancer has progressed, even after Tamoxifen was taken.

Exemestane effects are irreversible, permanently binding to the enzymes and it works as a false substrate for the aromatase enzyme by preventing converting androgen into estrogen. It is recommended to visit your doctor regularly if this drug is taken so they can monitor its effects.
